Retro Review - Gunstar Heroes

Sega Genesis Rom (Requires an emulator and rom)

Gun star
Heroes was created by Treasure (the same people behind Ikaruga) in 1993 for the Sega Genesis. It is a shooter and many people compare it to Metal Slug, although I think that is a very rough comparison, it does share some of the intense 2-D side scrolling action from the metal slug games. The game is based on fast movement and lots of action. In my opinion its a blast and loads of fun. The weapons system is very unique allowing you to combine weapons to get different results in a Kirby like style. The graphics are amazing for a genesis game and the animations are some of the best ever seen in a 2-D game during its time period. Another great thing about this game are the bosses, they fill the whole screen and are smoothly animated. As for the controls you get to choose between a free or fixed shooting direction. One of the only things I didn't like about this game was that it was a little short for my taste, but I guess you can only cram so much of those beautiful graphics on a genesis cartridge.

Overall this is one of my favorite games for the genesis and its one of those games you just cant stop playing once you give it a go. Now on to how it plays on the '2x. It runs very smoothly at 200mhz or slightly below and the resolution of the game fits the screen well, the only injustice done to this game by the 2x is the joystick. It's a little hard at times to maneuver you character and shoot all with the stick on the '2x. But even with the stick this game is so great it's still definitely worth the space on your SD card.

Therefore I give this game a 9/10

New Version of GMU

A new version of the nice little music player gmu is out. It now contains many cool new features not to mention the ones it already had. It can play .ogg .mp3 and some module formats. It also has albumart and id info. It uses a simple playlist and the file browser can scroll for long file names. I plan on using it for my main audio player now.

I give this app 8/10.

Open gl

I just thought I would let everyone know that rix is working hard on an opengl implementaion for the gp2x. He is reporting speeds of 20 fps on glxgears. He even plans on trying to port a small game. Good luck, and yet another gp2x feature on the way!

Wind and Water Puzzle Battles

Don't think of this as a review becuase its just some info on one of the contest winners. This game is called Wind and Water Puzzle Battles and it is made by Yuan Works. Yaun works is ran by two guys Yuan Hsi Chiang and Yuan Hao Chiang (these are the guys behind digi pets). They have been working on this game for three months and it will be their first game for the little handheld we all love. The game will be a "new arcade action puzzle based on the Five Traditional Chinese Elements, with an extensive system which not only allows expert puzzle players to enjoy the game, but also casual players."

The game features six characters all with extensive backgrounds. There are also many game modes to play through. As for the gameplay itself it looks quite creative and fun. This game will be commercial, but the authors have stated that a demo will come out too. So far the authors are saying the price will be somewhere betweeen $10-$15 and that it will most likely be a download. To find out more info visit the Wind and Water site.

Btw. These two guys seem really understanding and into the community. So kudos to them.

Flobopuyo V0.20

Flobopuyo is a remake of Puyo Puyo. Basically the point of the game is to make different colored bubbles connect in groups. Doesnt sound too fun huh? Well think again, becuase this game can be quite addicting. As for the quality of the remake everything is perfect. It runs smooth with audio and has some nice menu effects. The music would be my only compliant about this game. Im not sure looping record scratches even qualifies as music. But besides that this game is definatly worth the download for anyone who enjoys puzzle games (think tetris).

This game recieves 7/10

Enexfi

Looks like Jycet has been up to something =P. He has released a nice little file browser that includes renaming. Yes, renaming, the holy grail of all portable device file managing features. I know renaming can be done with the command line but this is way easier once you learn the layout. To check it out head over to Gp32x.

I give this little proggy a 9/10 (GPH should take some lessons from this app.)

The start of a new Gp2x Site

Thats it I'm sick and tired of this crap. I shall now begin posting all that is gp2x. Sit back and enjoy the show.
